This is the letter that is partially reproduced in Bennett's book, THE WRATH OF JOHN STEINBECK (Misc 1213). Written from Salinas while he was working on a ranch, he discusses his writing aspirations and what socialism seems to mean to the men he is working with. He is 19 years old.
